The eastern portion of the area once included slash pines, while most of the western part was a treeless freshwater marsh. Today, remnants of the wetland are evident, although red and white mangroves are the dominant species. Many of the site’s native plants and animals have succumbed to invasive, non-native species over the years, but native plants that provide food for native animals are now being reintroduced. http://www.islandwatersports.com/events/sunset-paddle-tours

Kialoa Stand up Paddles

Born on the Island of Oahu in 1991, KIALOA Paddles grew out of Dave Chun's love for the sport of outrigger canoe racing. Driven by the desire to build the best paddles in the world, Dave started crafting wood paddles on his parents' lanai. Shortly thereafter, he met Meg, a midwesterner transplanted to Hawaii. It was a marriage of west and east, island heritage and mainland progressiveness. The Chuns moved the company to Bend, Oregon in 1992, bringing the Aloha spirit with them. Against all odds, they started an outrigger club in the High Desert. Nowadays KIALOA makes a full line of stand up, outrigger and dragon boat paddles. And you can still find Dave and Meg paddling on the Deschutes River near the shop, together on the water.

Congrats to Will Curd for winning the SUPERtoy surfboard we gave away via Facebook with Island Water Sports in Florida. Sunday we threw a beach party at IWS to cap off the contest, and Will, who's from ventura, CA and was on his honeymoon in FL, was pretty psyched to win the SUPERtoy, everyone's favorite shortboard. Some sunshine, a smokin' bbq, a demo to try the new 2012 SUPERbrand surfboards, and a free SUPERtoy–I think we did this one right. Thanks for the fun, IWS!

Here's a few photos from Sunday.

Some locals holding it down and loving the new SUPERbrand boards.

Stop by IWS next time you're going through. It's full of good times and nice people and rad stuff to buy.

Will, who won the SUPERtoy board via the Facebook raffle, had been saving up for a new board but sacrificed the board fund to go on his honeymoon with his new bride. By sheer luck, he won the board while on his honeymoon. It turns out you CAN have everything you want.
