Surfboards

Like the sport of surfing itself, surfboards were originally developed in Hawaii. The first records of surfing date back to 1779. Surf boards come in different shapes, sizes, and specifications that improve your surfing experience. Selection of a board for surfing should be based on your size, ability, and location and not just for looks alone. Beginners might want to start with lightweight boards to give you better control and maneuverability. Some boards are made for speed while others are designed for competitions and overall performance. If you're new at this we recommend asking an expert help you pick the right one. As always, the team at Island Water Sports is here to help you choose the right surfboard for you.

Stand-Up Paddle

Stand up paddle surfing, or SUP, is a surface water sport, a variant of surfing where the surfer uses a paddle to move through the water while standing on a surfboard. The popularity of the modern sport of SUP has its origination in the Hawaiian Islands in the early 1960's. In SUP, one can paddle on the open ocean, in harbors, on lakes, rivers or any large body of water.

Skim Boards

The earliest records of skim boarding date back to the 1920’s. The best board for beginners are square ones, though they come in circles, ovals and teardrops also. The best size to start with in most cases stands about mid-chest. The principal of skimboarding is to hydroplane across the thin water of a receding wave, though tricks can be done in bigger waves. When riding out on the water on a skimboard, tricks and flips are attempted when coming into contact with an incoming wave. The real trick is in the landing.

Body Boards

Body boarding, just like surfing, is a long practiced water sport. While the surfboard is complex in its construction,
shape and design, the body board is basically a simple foam rectangle slab. The body board is used primarily in a lying down, or prone position. The body board is probably the easiest to ride. Basically it takes holding onto the board and kicking for dear life as a wave takes you in.
